The University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine (UA-CVM), located in Oro Valley, Arizona, invites applications for a faculty position with a primary focus on teaching veterinary surgery, anesthesia, and clinical management skills. We are seeking a veterinarian with clinical experience in small animal surgery to assist with the design and facilitation of active learning classroom sessions and clinical skills labs for pre-clinical veterinary students. The UA-CVM curriculum is organized by organ-system blocks, and faculty in this position will collaborate with the organ-system course leaders to build clinically relevant surgical course content geared toward “day-one-ready” veterinarians. Course involvement will include leading small animal surgery portions of advanced medical and surgical courses, developing and participating in clinical skills training and simulation-based education laboratories, and participating in species-focused elective courses having a surgical component. This position may also allow for flexibility in leading equine/large animal advanced medical, surgical, and clinical skills courses.
This career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure.
Participate as a team member in the design, development, and delivery of the pre-clinical small animal and/or equine/large animal veterinary surgical curriculum.
Deliver curriculum content to veterinary students within the CVM vision of inclusive, evidence-based Team-Base Learning and Peer Instruction pedagogy, in which students take substantial ownership of their learning, and student classroom time is focused on the collaborative application of content (as opposed to a focus on delivery of content).
Participate in the development and delivery of clinical skills instruction and simulation-based education.
Participate in the development of elective courses for students with an interest in surgery and assist in identifying and coordinating supporting expertise for the small animal and/or equine/large animal elective surgery courses.
Provide reasonable out-of-classroom availability to diverse cohorts of veterinary students for office hours and scheduled meetings to assist students with learning.
Engage in ongoing assessment and professional development aimed at the lifelong process of improving inclusive teaching and learning skills.
Contribute to the clinical year training by leveraging surgical experience to support the development and implementation of opportunities for clinical training in small animal and/or equine/large animal surgery.
Oversee and assist students at various surgical sites to perform spays and neuters on local shelter animals as they perform different surgical roles within designated teams.
Engage in the CVM collegial community, the university community, and the larger global academic community through participation in shared governance, advisory committees, and academic/professional society meetings.
DVM degree (or international equivalent)
At least two years of clinical experience in small animal and/or equine/large animal surgery
At least four years of clinical experience in small animal and/or equine/large animal surgery
Prior experience in teaching and learning using active learning techniques, clinical skills instruction, and simulation-based education
Board certification or board eligibility in a relevant specialty such as small animal, equine, or large animal surgery
