We are currently accepting externs for the 2021-22 year. Our hospital is located in Orange County, New York, approximately 90 minutes north of New York City but in the heart of horse country. Our staff includes 6 staff veterinarians including two board-certified equine surgeons. There are also 2 interns at the practice. The practice features a 13-stall hospital barn with three climate controlled intensive care stalls equipped with camera monitoring. There are two spacious treatment/outpatient exam areas, an operating room with overhead monorail system, and two padded induction/recovery stalls. The groundwork for a gamma camera has begun and we are looking forward to a brand new facility for scintigraphic studies. Equipment includes 3 portable digital radiography units; 5 portable ultrasound machines; 2 flexible endoscopes; a premier overland dynamic laryngoscope; video gastroscope; Powerfloat dental floats; shockwave machine; ProStride, IRAP and PRP regenrative therapies; Pegasus laser, and in-house lab. Although the practice is primarily ambulatory, on surgery days, up to eight elective procedures (including arthroscopies, upper airway surgeries, fracture repair, castration, umbilical herniorraphy, etc) are scheduled. Specialty lameness evaluations are also performed at the clinic. There are 4-5 veterinarians on the road every day. This gives our externs a lot of opportunity to learn from a variety of veterinarians. Various ambulatory cases are seen daily, including lameness examination, routine health care, reproductive work for both mares and stallions, internal medicine examinations, herd health, and emergency medicine. Opportunities for our intern include working with experienced reproductive veterinarians, Dr. Herb Burns and Jake Kiefer. We currently perform semen freezing, embryo transfer flushes, hysteroscopy, oviductal hydrotubation, oocyte aspiration, as well as more routine work with stallion collection, artificial insemination and mare and stallion reproductive examinations. At least 40% of our caseload is Standardbreds, both racehorses in training and breeding stock. Additionally, we see a wide variety of sport horses including hunter/jumper, dressage, and Western performance horses. Cases regularly involve all age groups, from foals to geriatrics. Clients are varied and include pet horse farms as well as large show horse barns, commercial breeding farms, local resorts and racetrack work. Pine Bush Equine Services serves as the primary veterinarians for the USDA New York Animal Import Center (one of only three import centers in the United States). Pine Bush Equine Services schedules appointments Monday-Friday and provides 24-hour emergency coverage. All night time emergency surgery is referred to a local surgical center. Externs will be able to work with board certified surgeon Dr. Michael Ross, world-renowned professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center and author of Dyson and Ross, Diagnosis and Management of Lameness in the Horse.
