Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital has opened up a 6 month Equine Veterinary Fellowship

Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital is a private, multi-specialty hospital located in Snohomish, WA dedicated to providing World Class veterinary care to our patients, owners, and referring veterinarians. The equine referral hospital provides 24-hour emergency and referral services for greater Western Washington as well as routine in-hospital and field evaluations for the local clientele. Snohomish is located 30 miles north of Seattle and is surrounded by the North Cascade mountain range, Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.

The equine referral hospital is housed in a facility that includes two full surgical suites with pillow recovery systems, a standing procedure/surgery suite, a reference-quality laboratory, a covered lameness evaluation arena, and several treatment areas. The main barn has stall space for 15 in-patients with an additional 3 climate-controlled ICU stalls and a 4-stall isolation facility. The hospital is well equipped with two SurgiVet anesthesia machines with ventilators, complete anesthesia monitoring equipment, extracorporeal shock wave, digital radiology, digital ultrasound, 600 mA conventional radiology, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, ASIF bone plating instruments, PRP, IRAP, and a 0.3 Tesla MRI.

Clients also have access to acupuncture, chiropractic and Chinese herbal medicine through our integrative medicine and rehabilitation center. We offer the services of clinical pathology, cardiology, ophthalmology, and radiology on a consultation basis with board-certified specialists.

The hospital sees approximately 1200 cases and performs 300 anesthesia/surgical procedures annually. We have an average hospital census of 10 in-patients. Our horse population is diverse and includes sport horses (eventing, hunter/jumper, dressage), racing (TB), endurance, western pleasure, and backyard pasture pets. This provides diverse experience for clinicians providing exposure to a wide range of breed- and discipline-related problems.

The fellowship program will provide comprehensive training in equine medicine, surgery, emergency/critical care, ambulatory medicine and surgery, and advanced imaging. Individuals receive training and mentoring from five board-certified clinicians (4 ACVS, 1 board – eligible ACVIM) and 3 experienced ambulatory practitioners. Our previous interns have gone on to large animal residencies (anesthesia, surgical, and internal medicine in the last 3 years) and private practices all over the country. The fellowship will join the interns while they rotate through the medicine, surgery and ambulatory services assisting with outpatient appointments, emergencies, elective surgeries, and assessment of the hospitalized patients. Interns share on call emergency duties for the equine hospital on a rotating schedule in conjunction with a senior clinician.
